Mikill Pane Interview

Friday, December 18th, 2009

Mash’s very own Mikill Pane talks to us about his music, passions and UFO’s.

Whats your name and where you from?

My name is Mikill Pane and I’m from U.F.O Town. I don’t expect you to know where that is because neither do I.

What is it that you do?

Write, record and perform. The same thing most writers/recording artists/performers do.

How would you like to be perceived by the music scene?

As that tall black guy that said whatever the f**k he liked. Alternatively, as one of the most important songwriters of our generation.

Do you fit into a genre or style?

Nope. Not really. Hmmm…maybe…nah.

Do you have an album?

Nope but I’ve got an EP called ‘Shatter’ and a forthcoming one. I’ve also got some tunes circulating on various radio stations.

Whats your favorite track from the EP and why?

‘Learning To Swim’ is my favourite tune because it means the most to me personally and I really love the production and the way Joanna Moore sings on it.

What do you think it is about where you come from that made you an artist?

I like to think that I would’ve been an artist even if I was raised in Bognor Regis. Living in East London has definitely had an impact on the way I listen to music and my eclecticism so I suppose that has in turn had a bearing on the way I put my creativity across but at the same time I was always eclectic as a youngster so my environment’s influence on me only goes so far.

What inspires you to be creative?

Just being alive – without sounding too much like a hippy.

Why don’t you enter Britains Got Talent?

Why don’t you? I heard asking stupid questions is considered a talent these days. Look how much money Jonathan Ross gets paid for doing it.

What’s the best advice you’ve had given to you regarding music?

‘You should take this music thing seriously, fam. You’ve got skills.’ – Anonymous.

How often are you in the studio?

I go to the studio when I feel like it but on average once or twice a week.

Do you prefer record or performing?

Performing. Hands down. Not that you have to put your hands up when you record…

Which artists are you into right now?

Miike Snow, Elzhi, Jay-Z, Joker, Keane, Buju Banton, Arctic Monkeys…a whole lot more too.

If you could work with any artist, who would it be and why?

Jay-Z. Simply because he’s my favourite artist of all time.

What do you think of the state of Britsh ‘urban’ music right now? What are your thoughts on acts like N-Dubz & Tinchy.

I don’t really think about the state of British ‘urban’ music. I couldn’t care less any longer. I’m not into N-Dubz and Tinchy personally but I can’t deny that they’ve had to work hard to get to where they are so I wish them continuous success.

Who shares the stage with you at live shows?

It used to be Headtrip but he quit the other day so it’s just myself and my trusty DJ Odin for the time being. Obviously if another vocalist is involved in the track and they’re present at the show, they’ll come up and do their part.

What other hobbies or interest do you have and how do they affect your music?

I cycle a lot and collect sneakers almost obsessively and sometimes I mention the two pastimes in my songs.

What would you like to be remembered for?

I’m not fussed. Remember what your memory allows you to.

What does the 2010 hold for you?

More songwriting, more performing, more growth, less time.

Any big ups?
